Parent Organizations at Deterding Elementary School
Deterding Arts Resource Team is a non-profit organization founded in 1981
by Deterding Elementary parents on the principle that an art and music
education is important to the development of a well rounded child.
The PTA is organized through the Executive Board and supports Deterding many ways. PTA organizes, funds and provides volunteers for many of the social and educational programs at
Deterding.

Parent Participation : Deterding encourages parents to become active
partners in our school.
At Deterding, parent participation takes many forms. Families are able to
volunteer at the school in a variety of ways to enrich the education of
their children. Deterding’s outstanding educational program could not exist
without the enormous amount of time, energy and talents provided by our
parents. Working together, we have provided over 18,000 hours of volunteer
time to support our students.
Here are some ideas of our yearly volunteer needs:
- School site committees
- School wide events - DART Art Festival, Jog-a-Thon, International Food
Festival, Book Fairs, Open House, Back to School Night, Back to School
Picnic, Red Ribbon Week, and Reading Incentive Month
- Field trip drivers
- Art docents
- Help supervise students in the cafeteria
- Early morning Choir Assistant
- Library Aide
- Yard Duty at recess
- Parking Lot Assistant
- Collating school newspaper on Friday mornings
- Copying homework and other school wide information
- Making posters and signs for school events
- Build some classroom shelves, coat racks, cubbies, etc. (Check
if there is a need.)
- Share your expertise in a subject matter that a class is studying.
Examples are: archeologists, artists, writers, puppeteers,
firefighters, gardeners, tutors, photographers, computer experts, doctors,
nurses, builders, newscasters, truck drivers, chefs, or mechanics.
- Help organize the Clothes Closet and the Lost and Found areas
- Tutor students
- Listen to a student's needs
- Fundraise for school wide projects
- Parenting classes
- Sharpen pencils
- Clean watercolor pots
- Adopt a garden area on the school campus - Plant, water, weed, etc.
- Adopt a room - help to keep it clean
- Sweep the pavement
- Make ice-bags for owies
- Purchase hours - $10 per hour
- Coordinate a school club. Examples are: Student Newspaper,
Chess Club, Garden Club, Book Club, Student Council, Nature Bowl, etc.
- School Beautification Days - This is a perfect opportunity for busy
work schedules and/or language barriers. Everyone in the Deterding
community works together gardening, sweeping, cleaning, and painting.
- Donate - Books, computers, calculators, art supplies, school supplies,
computer software, clothes for the clothes closet, money for the student
lunch fund. (Must obtain School Office authorization for these.)
- Design your own idea and let the Principal and the Volunteer
