Mission Statement

The staff at Deterding believes it is our responsibility to nurture the natural curiosities of students through the arts, humanities, and sciences, motivating them to become lifelong learners. The staff strives to develop a positive self-image in all students and encourage student responsibility for their actions. Deterding students will be critical thinkers and effective communicators who embrace challenges without fear of failure and grow into leaders who approach new situations with confidence and compassion.

Principal's Message : From Principal Sandra Rangel

Principal Kenfield passing keys to entering Principal RangelDear Deterding Parents,

Happy Spring everyone!

I wanted to take a moment and commend all our students on their efforts made during the 2nd trimester. As I read through the report cards, I saw so many students who demonstrated growth in all areas. Thank you to parents for all your efforts in working with your child’s teacher and your child to continue this path of academic achievement. Report Cards for second trimester progress went home Friday, March 19th. Be sure to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s academic progress. Report Cards create an opportunity to discuss your child’s academic progress. Whether the report card is all 3’s or grades that need improvement, take this opportunity to talk with your child about school and study habits. See what ways you can help your child. Make a plan for tutoring or extra study time, check your child’s class work regularly, and be sure to contact your child’s teacher with concerns. Small changes can make a big difference. One way might be to shut off the TV, computer, and/or video games and have your child read for at least 20 minutes. Helping your student today with lasting study habits for tomorrow is a gift they will carry for a lifetime.

I would like to commend our 1st and 3rd grade friends on their musical performances. 1st graders taught us about the weather in their musical performance of “The Weather Play” and 3rd graders took us on a musical trip in “Vacation to Mars” teaching us about our solar system. Great job students and teachers for your hard work and effort both on stage and behind the scene! As always both productions were well received by the students and parents – Great Job!

Deterding has several upcoming events that we hope that you will take part in. I hope you will take the opportunity to volunteer to make these events successful, as well as enrich your child’s educational experience at Deterding.

  • Open House - Tuesday, April 6
  • Jog-a-Thon – Thursday, April 8
  •  Book Fair – Begins Monday, April 19
  •  Science Night – Thursday, April 22
  •  DART Art and Music Festival – Sunday, May 2

STAR testing will begin April 20th and continue through May 14th. Teachers have been preparing students all year to be ready and confident for this assessment. During the weeks of testing, it is crucial that ALL students, 2nd – 6th grade, arrive to school on time and be in class before testing begins. Late students will not be allowed to go to class until after testing for that day is completed. This will result in students having to make up their test at a different time in a different room, and in some cases, with a different teacher. Please help your child to be successful with their testing by taking their test with their class – be at school AND on time! Testing will occur on different days according to grade level and classrooms. Once a testing schedule has been finalized we will post on the website to keep parents informed. Please check with your child’s teacher if you have not received your child’s testing schedule by April 19th.

As always please contact me if you have any questions, I will be happy to help!

Reminder: NO School March 29 – April 2

Have a wonderful Spring Break!
